Ancient Tamilians were active traders in various commodities, both locally and outside Tamil country. Sangam works give a detailed description of the trade, commerce and markets in big cities. The Sangam economy was simple and mostly self-sufficient. Ancient Trade, both inland and foreign, was well organized and briskly carried throughout the world. In Sangam period internal trade was brisk, caravans of merchants with carts and pack-animals carried their merchandise from place to place, Barter played a large part in all transactions and salt was an important commodity of trade. A witnessed the rise of maritime business activity.
